FAQ

How is the 195H different from a static-measurement digital angle gauge?

A static-measurement digital angle gauge is mainly intended for stationary angle measurement. The 195H is designed specifically for sharpening practice, providing real-time angle feedback asthe blade moves, making angle consistency easier to monitor and improve throughout each sharpening stroke.

What are the accuracy, resolution, and measurement range of the 195H?

The 195H offers ±1° accuracy under typical sharpening conditions with a 1° display resolution, and a measurement range of 0°–80°. During freehand sharpening, maintaining a consistent angle range is more important than holding one perfectly fixed number.

Why does the angle reading fluctuate during sharpening?

Slight fluctuations are normal because the 195H responds to changes in the blade angle in real time. A built-in filtering algorithm filters out rapid readout jumps caused by linear acceleration, keeping readings steadier and easier to follow during sharpening.

Is angle compensation required for different blade geometries?

The 195H measures the angle between its mounting surface and the sharpening stone. For blades with parallel sides, the displayed angle closely represents the sharpening angle. For blades with full-flat, convex, or asymmetrical grinds, an angle offset may be required to compensate for the effect of blade geometry on the displayed reading.

How should the 195H be set up before sharpening?

Place the 195H on the sharpening stone, press the ZERO button, and keep it still for about 2–3 seconds. Lift it and place it back on the stone to confirm that the display returns to zero. After zeroing, attach the 195H to an area on the main body of the blade that allows secure magnetic contact. Ensure that the device remains stable during sharpening. Keep the cutting edge parallel to the long edge of the device, with the display facing outward for easy reading.

What blades are compatible with the 195H?

For optimal stability and secure magnetic attachment, use the 195H on magnetically responsive blades 0.55 in. (14 mm) wide or wider. It is not suitable for ceramic knives or blades that are not magnetically responsive.

What sharpening angle is recommended?

The ideal sharpening angle depends on the knife and its intended use. The following are general per-side guidelines:

· Cleaver / Machete: 25°–30°

· Hunting / Pocket / Survival / Sport Knives: 20°–25°

· Chef's / Kitchen / Boning / Carving Knives: 17°–22°

· Fillet / Paring / Sushi Knives / Most Japanese Cutlery: 12°–17°

Consult the knife manufacturer or a knowledgeable knife shop to determine the exact angle appropriate for the knife.

What sharpening speed is recommended?

Use slow, controlled motions. When sharpening on an 8 × 3 in. (203 × 76 mm) stone, keep the speed below 30 back-and-forth motions per minute. Faster movement can increase hand-induced angle fluctuation.

 Is the 195H waterproof?

The 195H is IP54-rated for protection against dust and splashes. It is not waterproof and must not be immersed in water.
